I am not overly fond of musicals; some I will watch quite happily and I would rather avoid others. This is one that I will watch.

It tells a story not often told and concerns the plight of the Jews in eastern-Europe during the late nineteenth and early twentieth Centuries. Most of those affected were rather poor and essentially peasants. They lived alongside and within their communities and happily co-existed. Some held essential roles not professionally as doctors or lawyers but as shoemakers or shoe repairers, tailors etc. Some may have also held jobs amongst the Jewish community, in some religious capacity. If they had land, it was rather little, perhaps enough for a cow or a small field of potatoes or corn but many did not. Most would have been tenants of a, probably, non-Jewish landowner.

The Cossack forces were used, not always officially under government control, to force those Jews from their homes. The reasons were many, but mostly inconsequential. Some were forced to walk for weeks or months before they could reach a place of safety. Often, it entailed getting passage on a ship in steerage, sleeping on deck as they could not afford cabins, or below decks often in the ship's hold, and not always knowing their destination. It may be London, or New York, or it could be a north German, Dutch or French port. In most instances, they arrived at a destination without knowing where and without speaking whatever language it may be.

Some might find work in a factory of some description to earn money, or would start a business (several of which still exist). Some of their earnings may be saved to enable relocation at some later date to another destination, of which New York was one of the most popular.

The cast was well-selected, with the then largely unknown Topol in the adult male lead.

A wonderful job!

My answer to that question would be this: I wrote my dissertation on it at University. I love 'Fiddler on the Roof', but given that I must have watched it 50 times during the 9 months it took to squeeze out my academic plop, I'm not "in love" with it any more. And yes, I still can't bring myself to watch it again; but then it hasn't even been a year yet, so don't let that put you off. In short, this is amazing and if you don't watch it you're essentially endorsing the Holocaust. There, I said it.

There will no doubt be more informed and reasoned reviews than this but my sole criteria for a product is that it stays in the mind. Fiddler On The Roof is unforgettable and it is at least two decades since I saw it last. Having had some life experience, I found that seeing the film again was even more emotive. The casting is inspired and the plot keeps moving throughout. This is one of those rare films that has meaning for everyone.

The picture and sound quality are superb and the story is timeless. Topol is the main reason I got this version as it is the version I grew up listening to and other singer's just don't add the quality and emotion that make you feel for the characters.

TOP 500 REVIEWERon 9 August 2014
Generally a fine image transfer of this classic film deliberately shot "soft" but there are some audio sync problems - noted by many professional reviewers - that are not apparent on the dvd version. These should have been corrected by the manufacturers prior to release and it's quite extraordinary that they have not been sorted. At about two hours into the film the audio comes out of sync and about five minutes later this is very bad indeed. The song which follows is totally out of sync and especially the dialogue. Fortunately it comes back in sync after that until one section when a whole line of dialogue is missing from the track! That said, it didn't ruin my enjoyment of this classic musical but it did make me wonder about quality control at such a major studio!

I am old enough to remember Topol before he was cast for this musical. He was a natural talent. His appearance in this role was a massive boost to his popularity and nobody can ever take it away. Such a perfect fit.

Love this film - it's a great insight into how much the Jews have had to deal with over the years & continue to do so. The history is very interesting & the family issues are valid for today - no matter what your background.

Great Movie, it triggered many memories from the past, of seeing this film in other locations overseas. The story is no doubt well known but remains a good story to be retold..appears to have become much quoted in literature.

Arrived in good condition and well before the specified time. Only thing I wasn't too happy about was that it wasn't in a proper DVD case. It was in a thin, plastic case instead. But otherwise, the disk works fine and I am happy overall.

Five star rating because this is a brilliant film that portrays the life and plight of Jewish people. It covers many aspects of their trials - it sometimes brings joy and at other times it breaks your heart. Well worth watching.
