Legendary follow up to their amazing debut. The 2nd in 3 re-releases from Jamiroquai's back catalog, it's a mixed bag. The album is great as you would expect, but the bonus disc was a little bit of a let down. Too many live tracks and not enough exclusive content (I don't really need an instrumental version of 'Morning glory', the one track from the album I could live without). I would have preferred some demos and perhaps a rare or exclusive remix or 2, but it's not the worst of their work.
Plus there's a great booklet on the inside with J Kay himself giving us a glimpse into what the band were getting up to at the time. A real treat for any fan. :)

Hello, you're listening to DJ Matt on 90's Guy.FM. I hope you're enjoying this fine New Year, 2012, so looking forward to the London Olympics. I've just received a request from another Amazon reviewer. Apparently the man is fond of Jamiroquai music, and after reading my review on "Emergency On Planet Earth" he wanted me to write another review on another Jamiroquai album. Well I don't usually do requests, but since I am feeling generous at this time I am going to grant that reviewer's request by taking a look at Jay Kay and co.'s 2nd album "The Return Of The Space Cowboy."

First up to bat is JUST ANOTHER STORY. We have a quiet start, then there's a hint of samba, and then we get to the band's familiar acid jazz style. There is a bit of foul language you should be aware of if you dislike that sort of thing in music; but the slow tempo which gradually picks up combined with the nice variations in sounds makes the song worth the 8:49 of your time.

STILLNESS IN TIME is a bright and cheerful piece that tells you how good times in your life will happen if you fight and overcome your problems. The small Spanish vibe created through the use of the guitar adds to its cheeriness. Meanwhile HALF THE MAN has a mellow vibe and is a decent song to listen to. Up next is LIGHT YEARS. Compared to most of the songs on this album, this one has a stronger sound due to its heavy piano notes. It sounds like Jay Kay's vision of the directions that the world should be taking. An environmental message, perhaps? Overall it's not bad.

When you start listening to MANIFEST DESTINY it initially sounds lame. But the trumpets on the chorus part help pick it up to make it well worth listening to. THE KIDS has a fast tempo and is one to move your feet to. In MR.MOON a guy tries to make a move on a girl, but with no success. Despite the slightly depressing story the tune is actually upbeat. The band's traditional jazz style will win you over on this one.

SCAM has a political message similar to "Emergency On Planet Earth's" TOO YOUNG TO DIE. It sounds OK, but runs on a bit too long for my liking. The keyboard notes near the end are charming though, and do brighten it up a little bit. JOURNEY TO ARNHEMLAND is an instrumental piece. I liked hearing the didgeridoo on the first album (particularly in WHEN YOU GONNA LEARN) but here I feel the instrument has been overly saturated and brings the song down to average quality.

My personal favourite song is MORNING GLORY. I love everything about it: the slow tempo, the mellow vibe, the soft lyrics, and the clever use of the keyboard. They all blend together to make a perfect track. After that the album draws to a close with SPACE COWBOY. Listening to the lyrics, the impression I get is that Jay is expressing a liking towards nature and hatred towards heavy use of technology. I think the Space Cowboy is supposed to someone who likes technology a lot. In any case I just like the tune. It has that typical Jamiroquai sound.

There's a lot of different music styles used in "The Return Of The Space Cowboy." Some are used partially and some are used throughout entire songs, and all provide layers of variety to the album. But Jamiroquai's trademark acid jazz style is still the main presence; and overall this album is fantastic. It clearly deserves its 5 Stars. Well that's it. It's time for me to sign off now. I do hope you enjoy the rest of your Amazon shopping. This is DJ Matt and you've been listening to 90's Guy.FM.

Sounding for all the world like it was released in 1974 rather than 1994, JK was never going to win any awards for cutting-edge rock.. but 70's-style funk is his thing, and this album is probably the best example of the early Jamiroquai sound. The lyrics are charmingly dippy - Q magazine complained that Lightyears, with phrases like "duty to assistance" and "new solution" sounded like minutes from a council meeting - but the music is so damn funky that all is forgiven. And that wonderful bassline.. the title track makes me want to break out the air-bass every time. The overall sound quality is a tad dull and compressed, but given that Jamiroquai must have had the finest recording studios in the world at their beck-and-call, courtesy of Sony, I assume that the effect was deliberate. It certainly adds to the retro appeal.. This is an essential release for anyone into acid jazz and 70's funk, but be warned, it's very different to Jamiroquai's recent harder-edged dance-flavoured music.
