In the booklet notes, Michael Rose tells us that Sandra 'Puma' Jones wasn't in the studio for these sessions for some reason, which is a shame. Puma ~ who sadly died of cancer at the far too young age of 36 ~ was an integral part of the band over several albums, and her 'female energy' is missed.
What we do get is a hugely likeable set of songs with plenty of feeling and variety of mood. What I'm not so keen on is the constant synth 'whooping' sound that pervades most tracks. It gets intrusive after a while, adding nothing to the sound or sense.
Rose sings with his usual grace and melodic flair, and the band, which includes Ansell Collins, Sly Dunbar & Robbie Shakespeare, really cooks.
The extra two tracks are okay, no more, both six-minute disco remixes ~ who needs 'em!
Black Uhuru are always worth listening to, and I'm happy to say I like this album, but I won't be playing it as often as most of my reggae records.

RIP Puma {1953-90}
