I remember buying a Garner single back in the 60s and loving the way he bounced joyously along with "You do something to me". So, now I'm rounding up my collection of jazz piano players, I thought that Garner's best known recording "Concert by the Sea" would be as good as I remembered that single.
His right hand, to be fair, is pretty inventive and quite entertaining. But his left - oh, my stars! We all know he's always laid down a percussive 1,2,3,4 chordal beat with that hand; but after a couple of numbers this total lack of invention becomes an aural drag, especially and hilariously on slow numbers. You could replace his left hand with a bass drummer hitting the beat and not notice much difference.
So the unthinkable has to be said - he's ok, but a jazz giant? Dream on. Get yourself some Roland Hanna if you want proper piano.
