the last time I got excited about a Metallica release...
on 2 August 2017
Hearing this album was the last time I got excited about a Metallica release. It was really the last of the albums to feature the genre defining epic songs that up to this point they were known for. It was also a time of adjustment for the band. As such this is not their best album (but then Master of Puppets will never be eclipsed by anyone short of Miles Davis). Some of the songs are a little laboured while others are out and out classics. This edition is the standard release with all that this entails (standard booklet etc) so nothing stands out. When this album was originally released critics pointed out that the bass is very (very) low in the mix. This is still the same all these years later. Not something that endears the album. This would have been so much more with a good remix and the proper deluxe treatment.
