The volume 9 of Horowitz Complete Masterworks contains some of the most impressive recordings in his entire discography. The pianist's highly charged, extreme temperament suites the both composers' music. Scriabin's early works are played with amazing delicacy and ethereal beauty. Horowitz's rendition of Vers la flamme is incandescent and driven by the dark and sinister forces. Few pianist can match his scintillating, going-for-broke account of Rachmaninov's 2nd sonata. The clarity and the verve of his playing is simply astounding.
