I adore Loretta Lynn. Whilst on You Tube I discovered Loretta singing Ones on The Way and Fist City and decided to order this CD. She is a living Legend. Her songs speak straight to the heart of any wife and mother and she does so with such humour, even my husband loves her music. This is essential in my car as all my kids love to have a good old country sing along. This CD is great value for money and has got some excellent songs on it. We especially love singing to Coalminers Daughter, Fist City, Ones on the Way, Hey Loretta, and many more. The true Queen of Country music!

Loretta`s date of birth is given as 1935 in the brief sleeve-note to this bargain compilation, when in fact she was born in 1932. Otherwise, you really can`t go wrong if you want a cheap and cheerful way into this wonderful woman`s music.
Loretta has a gritty yet smooth, straight-down-the-line voice, less syrupy-sexy than her friend the late Patsy Cline, less sweet and childlike than Dolly P, and less intense than the great Tammy Wynette. All sound pitch-perfect to my ears, and all are worth anyone`s time who loves fine singing and good songs.
Loretta is also a touch more explicit in her lyrics, many of which she wrote herself. An obvious example is her song The Pill, banned by certain country radio stations on its release, and one can hear why. It`s little less than a peon of praise to the liberating qualities of said pill, and one can imagine the reactions of worried male radio controllers across the conservative south in those days.
The compilation rightly kicks off with her own Coal Miner`s Daughter, taking in such gems as You`re Lookin` at Country, the marvellous, unambiguous Out of My Head And Back in my Bed, Don`t Come Home A-Drinkin` (With Lovin` On Your Mind), the heartfelt One`s On the Way - the `one` being of course yet another baby; Loretta apparently had had four before she was out of her teens - as well as another Shel Silverstein number, Hey Loretta.
Rated X is a Lynn song about the social perils of being a divorced woman, while Fist City is an aggressive little number by one hell of a feisty lady!
There`s also the lovely Blue Kentucky Girl, plus four duets with her onetime musical partner Conway Twitty, all of which are affecting in their different ways, both As Soon As I Hang Up the Phone and the closing song The Letter being `concept` songs, a little of which goes a long way, though these two don`t outstay their welcome.
All in all, Loretta sounds just great on all these 24 tracks, a true country legend, still going strong at (if I`m right!) just turned 81, with a pure but gutsy voice and the experience to belt out her songs like she means them. She can put over a mean ballad with the best of them, too.
As the lady sings:

If you`re lookin` at me
You`re lookin` at country

I`m not going to argue with that.

Any Loretta Lynn fan will be fully satisfied by this collection. It contains 24 tracks - 4 with Conway Twitty - and all the expected tracks. I have always liked Coal Miners Daughter and After the Fire is Gone. plus an early feminist anthem - The Pill. She produces good versions of Paper Rose and Blue Kentucky Girl. I also liked her cover of her friend Patsy Cline's hit She's Got You. While never a huge Loretta Lynn fan I was persuaded to buy this after watching a documentary of her life on the box. I was certainly not disappointed.

I am just blown away by the timeless quality of Loretta Lynns output after listening to this bargain sampler. She's so real. Her background as the coal miners daughter and and teenage mother is so credibly reflected in her songs. And it is good time music, uplifting and positive. No country music collection would be complete without her work represented. Certainly paved the way for Dolly Parton.

Loretta is a superb country performer and songwriter, It was she whom the film Coal Miners Daughter with Sissy Spacer was based. This collection has very good songs throughout.
