This is a great nostalgia record from the 60s and is as fresh today as ever. Musicianship of this calibre never dates. I bought it mainly to re-acquaint myself with the magical voice of Lani Hall who was sometimes double-dubbed to make it sound like she was singing with a twin sister.
She had a supreme controlled vibrato and a wide pitch-range. She was married to Herb Alpert - and her ability to handle really difficult melodic leaps was phenomenal. The whole band made a huge influence on Latin with a Jazz feel. My only criticism is that the recording engineers who transferred this from LP masters did not set the tonal curve with the proper emphasis on the bass, so it's come across on the CD as so violently strong that the bass control on my hifi has to be set to Minus 6 - If I leave it Flat response it booms badly and spoils the music. But apart from that I can't fault this and it is super to have it in my collection.

I first remember hearing some of these recordings on radio 2 back in the 70's.Someone (I cant remember who) played
them a lot.Seems a bit strange now as none of Sergio Mendes tunes were hits in the UK.So to the music. Here we have mainly covers of British and american pop tunes all spruced up with strings and latin beats, plus a small number of authentically brazillian tunes. Its a bit cheesy & kitsch certainly but its also very nice.Sergio and his band are certainly fine players and the vocals by Lani Hall & co often wonderful. Not something you can listen to all the time but fantastic for adding zest to a rainy weekend.

If you are not so sure about Bossa Nova music, then I can recommend this album for the Ice Cool versions it present of Mas Que Nada, Wichita Lineman, the Beatles songs and especially Scarborough Fair. They are stunning!

The unique and exciting Brazilian music of Sergio Mendez is captured on this album which basically contains every one of the most popular songs. Great value and highly enjoyable Latin listening!
