Pure Magic and the timeless professional voice of Lani Hall
on 29 July 2016
This is a great nostalgia record from the 60s and is as fresh today as ever. Musicianship of this calibre never dates. I bought it mainly to re-acquaint myself with the magical voice of Lani Hall who was sometimes double-dubbed to make it sound like she was singing with a twin sister.
She had a supreme controlled vibrato and a wide pitch-range. She was married to Herb Alpert - and her ability to handle really difficult melodic leaps was phenomenal. The whole band made a huge influence on Latin with a Jazz feel. My only criticism is that the recording engineers who transferred this from LP masters did not set the tonal curve with the proper emphasis on the bass, so it's come across on the CD as so violently strong that the bass control on my hifi has to be set to Minus 6 - If I leave it Flat response it booms badly and spoils the music. But apart from that I can't fault this and it is super to have it in my collection.
