Could have been so much better!
on 29 August 2013
The package splits into two sections; Archive live & studio cuts and demos going back to 1967 (discs 3 & 4) and a supposedly full concert performance from the Lamb Tour of 74/75.
Discs 3 & 4 are of passing interest; a curiousity, but not discs to occupy the CD player (or ipod) for any length of time.
The real interest is the "lamb" concert. There are a number of unofficial lamb recordings out there in various states of completeness and sound quality. No such issues here then! The sound quality is first rate and this release should have put paid to any further interest in any unofficial offerings.
However - the concert appears to be edited (certainly some of the Gabriel narative is missing); the sound levels are not consistent between some of the tracks (download version) so that the sound level jumps between pieces that should be seamless, thus ruining the effect of listening to a complete live event; the final song (It) is faded out before the end and omits any audience appreciation and there are no encore tracks. On top of that, the CD version sells at an extortionate £90. All in all, the producers have done a pretty good job of ruining what could have been a fabulous product - well done!
One other whinge. Why is there never any product literature, sleevenotes or artwork available as part of the download?
