I found out about Chris Riefert from the first Death album, and when I got the review of the nineties in Terrorizer, I found that this was in their top 100. I already owned the CD, The Acts Of The Unspeakable, which I thought was good, and this was meant to be better. I got a copy on LP over the summer, and man, it was just as they'd said. The typical Death metal sound from AMerica had never sounded this horrible, and Riefert's vocals are just excellent. The main thing that sets Autopsy apart from many American DEath Metal acts is it's lack of speed. It's more torturous when it's at it's most slow. The riffs are truly terrifying, conjuring up wicked pictures of whatever he's growling about, whether it's necrophilia, or just plain Death. The songs themselves are slow, but have fast parts, and this is balanced by the shortness of each song. The songs, "Dead", "Twisted Mass Of Burnt Decay", and the like are arguably the best songs written by this now sadly defunct band. Overall, 18 songs of pure, downtuned, scary and horrible death metal, that is still fresh even today. This is part of the reason as to why Autopsy have such a legendary status in the Underground. Mental Funeral is one of my personal favorite albums in death metal.
