The sombre cover painting and title of Like A Tim's 3rd release for Digital Hardcore subsidiary Geist had led me to believe that this record was going to represent a new more mature departure for Like A Tim, but stylistically `I'm Serious' is practically identical to previous offerings. As before this is an instrumental album of highly melodic retro sounding keyboard and drum machine electronica: along the way Tim Van Leijden produces sounds like a chirpy soundtrack to an old Megadrive game (`Forever Young'), kooky Japanese traditional music (`Catch Me'), even bizarre reworkings of Gary Glitter's `Rock and Roll' (`Someday') and Gene Chandler's `Duke of Earl' (`Sure'), but rarely anything that could be called `serious'. A decent album with some catchy melodies, though rather one-dimensional in approach, `I'm Serious' is a pleasant if rather relentlessly cheerful dose of knowingly retro electronica.
