Surely overrated on the Amazon reviews but each to his own
on 22 March 2011
The 1980s was a difficult period for rock (if not all popular) music. This album has the thin production of the later Rainbow CDs, lacking bass and power. The song writing too is mostly average. Opening track "Knocking On Your Back Door" and the title track are certainly the highlights with Wasted Sunsets and Not Responsible also pretty good. The rest are barely adequate but fortunately there are no real stinkers. Bonus track Son of Alerik has the basis of a good guitar based instrumental but is too repetitive with the same basic tune hardly varying for 10 minutes. Blackmore seems to run out of ideas on how to sustain his soloing halfway through the track.
For me this is weakest of the Mk2 reunion albums but with 2 of the best tracks. The House of Blue Light is more consistent but The Battle Rages On is by far the best.
