From the very start of Tuonela it is clear that this is a band on form. "The way" is a remarkable song, where there's a quantitate depth, intriguing synths and a very solid guitar tone. "Morning Star" has a well constructed guitar riff and solid mid-line. "Nightfall" picks up the tempo and melody in intoxicating fashion, where the title track is another delicate and smooth effort; the undisputed arabian and metal master-class of "Greed" brings us to the halfway point of the album and in terms of enjoyment, not a moment too soon.
"Divinity" is a tranquil and ominous start to begin with, but quickly returns us to another quality prelude of majestic songwriting. "Shining" is the best song on the album. Featuring a great balance of tune, riffs and prog-ness and simply sublime in everyway. "Withered" is up next, and as expected, is another musical triumph in musical innovation and theater in a suitably great opening lead and chorus. "Rusty room" is a delightful and beautiful soundscape; which is succeeded in the ending finale of "Summer's end" where another blossoming and progressive themed Amorphis piece closes the dramatic affair in style.
Tuonela is a diverse and elegant affair which solidifies Amorphis as one-of the best metal bands to come out of Finland. But even though Tuonela isn't quite as memorable as "Skyforger" (which was simply an unbelievable effort.) It has a wonderful clarity and inspired songwriting making re-visits throughly satisfying. Fans of progressive and melodic metal should certainly check out this LP and any of the other albums of Amorphis to discover this band's unparalleled metal greatness.
I imagine at the time of this release some amorphis fans were in shock , i am newer to the band so i wasnt there then but bands i love have done things similar, heck like opeth but they never made an album as good as this. This is flawless, such a collection of songs, breathtaking in fact, no filler all killer is a cliche but its fxxking true here, dont be a plug, get this beauty.
