An absolute classic and great reissue - vinyl lovers can buy this particular release with confidence as this is a nice clean heavyweight pressing produced with care (unlike the Premier Hits collection which is very poor - I had two different copies from two separate retailers and both were bad pressings that looked like they had been used as frisbees in the pressing plant!).

There's not a lot I can say about this album that's not already been said by the other reviewers. Reviewing music is always difficult - it's always going to be subjective. But in my opinion, this is one of the most influential albums of the last forty years & should be in the same league as "Dark Side Of The Moon", "Diamond Dogs" "Scary Monsters", "Dare", "Autobahn" & - dare I say it & be called a heretic - "Unknown Pleasures" & "Closer"

I bought this album back in '79 at the age of 15 & it was the greatest thing I'd heard. It managed to involve me completely - it's darkness & bleakness were all enveloping - it was never going to be background music. Numan managed to convey his vision of loneliness & isolation in a dystopian future so vividly that it was scary. It's not a happy album - but then I suppose that was Numans idea. Small wonder that Numan has now announced he suffers from Aspergers.

However, it is a compelling listen from the first single, almost whiney keyboard notes of "Me, I Disconnect From You" through to the last synthetic drum crashes of "I Nearly Married A Human". "You Are In My Vision" & "Replicas) are particular favourites, but to me, there are no duff tracks on this album, & the re-release with extra tracks is magnificent.

Numans next two albums were good, but this is superb - if Numan had kept up this level who knows how big he would have been now. I saw him touring "Replicas" in 2008 - I have been to hundreds of gigs & this was up there. If you have any interest in synth music, especially the bleaker styles of Kraftwerk etc, you will like this album.

numan his 1st no.1 LP. it has aged well however, this CDre-issue (1996) hasn't been remastered like later issues were! the sound is original 1979 and the tracklist is the original too! the price of this cd has risen by about 400% since 2013/14.
it is a very collectable cd though and can command £40.00+ if new/sealed!
a decent listen to some original in the mix classic machine rock....

Bought this album after seeing numan last year on the replicas, pleasure principle and telekon tour last September which was great. This is a fantastic album. Really innovative of its time and leading to other artists to follow his lead. This album is full of great tracks and has been played several times over.
Songs well written by numan about the part man part machine replicas that he dreams about since a child.
It's a pure genius concept!

Early Masterpiece from Mr Numan when he was still part of Tubeway Army before he ditched the band and then reformed the band as Gary Numan.

Along with Kraftwerk he probably did the most to enhance and hasten the use of Synthesisers in Modern Music, and this album is one of the best to showcase the early analogue Moog and Roland Synths in New Wave Music.

A highly recommended stunning masterpiece only surpassed by his first solo album The Pleasure Principle.

I'm sure most people have an album that formed a soundtrack to their lives at some point in their years and in 1979 for most of it, this one seemed to be mine. It's dark, dystopian and occasionally deeply melancholic world conveyed in electronic synth music captivated me from the start. It may be a ropey thing to say now many years further on - but when things were clashing, not making sense and falling apart, this album seemed to be a tonic to listen too and what a tonic it was. There's a lot been said about Gary Numan's influences at the timelike Kraftwerk, Bowie, John Foxx etc but for a young bloke and his band breaking off in such a bold electronic direction away from punk as it were, this stuff was awesome.
Somehow it's not suffered that badly with the passage of time and although Mr. Numan has reinvented himself a few times over, been sadly cast to the wilderness and back again and is now rightfully finally gaining some seriously long overdue respect from the music industry, (even though he has pulled himself away from his earlier catalogue), this album stands as a beacon of something chillingly good - and not in the mellow sense. If you like your electronic music to be on the sinister side, buy this then buy the 'Pleasure Principle' as well which follows it where Gary Numan really finds the motor that drives the robotic heart of his 'human amongst the machines' music.

I had all the album's the first time around and they really do stand the test of time. Finding out from Numan in La la Land that after finding a Moog Synrh in the recording studio he rewrote all of Replicas is amazing. I totally still love Replicas it is my favourite Numan album.

This is an album from my youth. I would have been about 17 when it was released. An absolute classic rediscovered! At the time there was nothing like Tubeway Army / Gary Numan. Are friends electric was number one for weeks. I love the gloomy synthesised dark sound of tracks like Down in the Park and Replicas. Science fiction / Philip K Dick lyrics with weird sexual undertones! Excellent listening.
