I first heard 'un di all'azzurro spazio' when I listened to the first 'three tenors' live on Radio 2 from Italy during the world cup. All these years later,I am finally getting round to exploring and buying whole operas. I was very taken by the first review, combined with an excellent website 'must have operas' which is extremely useful for a learner like me.
This opera is sublime. I defy anyone not to shiver during Bastianini's opening aria and it goes on from there. As for Tebaldi's 'la Mamma morte'....why bother with Callas? All that worries me is how to equal or better this, when it's only the second full recording I've bought. Oh well............

ANDREA CHENIER is a masterpiece and an unforgettable experience in the theatre (when properly staged). I have several recordings, including the live 1955 Scala Votto/del Monaco/Callas version. This Decca recording, dating from 1957 in Rome, is by far the very best. Gavazzeni elicits powerful sounds from the Santa Cecilia Orchestra, full of verismo drama. The soloists cannot be equalled. Bastianini is very expressive as Gerard, flawed human rather than vengeful monster. Andrea Chenier was, together with Otello, one of Mario del Monaco's signature roles. I do not believe anyone has come close to him ever since, not even Corelli, Vickers, or Domingo. He is excellent here, despite a rather mediocre Improvviso (too much shouting, rough tone, short breath control), which should had been taped on a better day. He is marginally more exciting dramatically and lyrical vocally at La Scala with Callas in 1955.
Renata Tebaldi is the undisputed star of this recording. In a state of grace, with endless vocal resources, huge high notes, fearless delivery and rare passionate involvement, her "Mamma morta" is overwhelming. The final duet, Andrea and Maddalena going to the guillotine together, welcoming Death with the dawn, and Love conquering the darkest of destinies, is really incomparable, almost too much to listen to. SUBLIME!
If you only buy one version of this fabulous opera, make it this one. Absolutely, highly recommended.

Andrea Chenier is a very interesting, melancholic verisimo opera and this is indisputably its best recording! Del Monaco, a force of nature, heroic and dramatic here is heard in one of his best roles and performances. Only F.Corelli has managed to equal him (and perhaps surpass him but his supportive cast is not good). He is accompanied with a legendary Bariton, E. Bastiannini to whom the role of Gerard fits like a glove. Finally, on this set is heard the Maddalena who Giordano could never even dream of, Renata Tebaldi, in excellent vocal form (this is a 1957 recording). Her La mamma morta is a shocking experience out of this world! It will leave the most demanding listener breathless! There is also a young Cossotto as Bersi heard. Concluding, this recording is a miracle and such are made once in a lifetime. Get it!

the best recording for 50+ years. I was present at ROH when Domingo's oesophageal reflux rendered him too uncomfortable and he had to leave stage in mid first aria.
