Firstly, the music:
Humans have a tendency to like best the first thing they ever tried. If you grew up with the old Star Wars, then you probably prefer them to the new ones; if you grew up with SW1,2 & 3, then you probably prefer them over the old ones.

In my mind, however, TB3 is the best of the "Bells" series, even though I first got TB1, then TB2, then TB3 and finally Millennium Bell. TB3 has a beautiful overall musicality and roundedness that the others are slightly lacking in. TB2 and TB1 are great, but they get a bit frivolous towards the end, and that almost spoils it. MB is an experimental album, and as such, not bad, but for me bottom of the list of all the "Bells".

Track 6, "The Inner Child" is one of the most haunting melodies I've ever heard, and the contrasting shift from "Serpentine Dream" is brilliant. The piano on "Moonwatch" is reminiscent of TB1 & 2, but the good parts. If you like Mike Oldfield, then certainly give this album a try.

The Vinyl Record:
Unfortunately, I suspect that the vinyl was pressed from a digital source. My 40+ year old TB1 somehow sounds sharper than my brand new TB3. Very sad. Save your money and buy the CD.

If you like Oldfield, you will love this ...as simple as that, many CD reviewers get lost in paragraphs of pretentious comments, why ? This is Oldfield at his best,if you don't like Oldfield, don't buy it. It's best listened to on good NC Headphones, just switch them on and keep the world out for an hour.

Brought bang up to date with techno beats and generally more uplifting on side 1. A bit of Massive attack here, a bit of Underworld there. Some Fleetwood Mac, and even Kraftwerk. All starts to go wrong on side 2. Dull, flat, heard it all before.
