This excellent compilation from BMG in 1989 contains 15 tracks from the late, great Lou Reed's solo career, and only two with band The Velvet Underground, presented at the end. For such an early CD release, the sound quality of it is actually quite good. The set list itself offers casuals and newbies the perfect introduction, although, as Dave Thompson who wrote the liner notes says at the end of his study: "For the real 'Best Of Lou Reed', you'll need a dozen albums at least. Here is the appetiser.' - and that, is exactly what 'Retro' is.

Chronicling Reed's two stints on the RCA label between 1972-1976 and 1982-1986, many of his most memorable and dramatic songs are here, including the perfectly crafted foursome from his masterpiece second album 'Transformer': 'Walk On The Wild Side', 'Satellite of Love' and 'Perfect Day', and 'Vicious'. With excellent, instantly identifiable vocals, this beautiful, evocative music which will always remain timeless, and I think every home should have some Lou Reed in their CD collection. This irresistible taster is a must for fans of the contemporary glam rock sound.

This album is a very good general introduction to Lou Reed's music. It picks highlights from the more dramatic songs of his portfolio from his Velvet Underground days to around 1993 when the album was first released. Particular highlights are Vicious, Walk on the Wild Side, Berlin and Wild Child. It does not suffer the drawbacks of a greatest hits album as it includes less well known but classic songs such as Lady Day and Caroline Says II. This album got me hooked into him 8 years ago. If you enjoy eccentric, easy to play guitar along to rock n' roll, buy this. It will make you cool.

If you are looking for a great 'best of' Lou, for yourself or for someone else, it's right here, buddy! This, is what you are looking for. It's a great introduction to Lou Reed or a fine addition to a collection. As great in the car, as it is at home. And with songwriting as good as this, it's bound to appeal to most people. This is a wise purchase, I recommend you go for it!
