I'm really surprised by the great reviews this CD has been given. I think it's dreadful! Many of the tracks have been edited crudely. I assume in an attempt to remove tape hiss many tracks have lost the start of the opening note, that to my ears gives a strange and abrupt start to the song. There are plenty of Beach Boys compilations out there available used for very little money. Unless you're not really 'listening' to this album and merely using it as background noise I'd suggest avoiding this one.

The back catalogue of this evocatively-named Californian group is littered with compilations that show off just how effectively they married Chuck Berry guitar riffs with doo-wop harmonies, to lyrics about the sun, sea, surf, cars, and girls. This unfussily-presented 32 song double LP, from 1990, does it as well as most. In broadly chronological order it features nearly all of their most well-known and best-loved songs from the 1960s, including: 'California Girls'; 'Good Vibrations'; 'God Only Knows'; 'I Get Around'; 'Sloop John B'; 'Barbara Ann', and 'Surfin' USA'. These easily identifiable tracks justify the remark made by music journalist Peter Doggett in the plainly-expressed, informative song-by-song sleeve note when he says that it was The Beach Boys who, "led the American reply to the British invasion of The Beatles and their contemporaries". Pleasingly, the compilers have also snuck in some occasionally overlooked, often-undervalued tracks such as 'Darlin' and' 'Heroes and Villains', alongside chart-toppers like 'Help Me Rhonda' and 'Do It Again'.

But this unit-shifting EMI set isn't without its faults. The sensitive aspect of this radio-friendly group's musical personality could have been better emphasised by the inclusion of melancholic songs of real value such as 'Caroline No.' and 'I Just Wasn't Made For These Times'. And it would have been no great shame if a few of the tunes here - like the pair of covers on the last of the 4 sides of vinyl ('California Dreamin' and 'Bluebirds Over The Mountain') - had been dropped from the running order.

TOP 500 REVIEWERon 10 June 2015
As compilations go this is up there with the best. 28 tracks of the Beach Boys at the top of their form (or close to the top, anyway). And at the price this is great value.

It's easy to forget just how important the Beach Boys were to the progression of popular music in the 1960s. Brian Wilson used to watch what the Beatles were doing and try to match them on the artistic level. The Beach Boys 'Pet Sounds' was born of this rivalry and Paul McCartney regarded it as one of the greatest popular-music albums ever made. It spurred the Beatles to complete 'Revolver' and then make 'Sgt Pepper'.

Brian Wilson was the Beach Boys' creative genius and when he broke down they lost their leadership position. However they left a huge repertoire of major hits, many of which are captured on this compilation. Some of the most finely crafted pop-music recordings ever made are here. Pete Doggett has written a paragraph in the accompanying booklet giving a little background to each of the tracks, which makes for interesting reading.

My criticism of compilation albums is that they lose the balance and variety of the 'regular' studio albums. They run the risk of being 'in your face' as hit after hit presents itself. However, if you don't want to buy the complete back catalogue, this album is a great way to own 28 of their finest moments.

The Beach Boys put out some of the greatest harmony rock music from the 1960s and there's not too many other bands who could match them then or since.
The Four Seasons, The Byrds and to some extent, Anmerica, immediately come to mind, The Beatles, of course and also The Searchers.
What can be said about this collection which is at a consistently high standard?
Well as a personal opinon, I/d swap The Little Girl I Once Knew, Barbara-Ann and Bluebirds Over The Mountain for Catch A Wave, Wendy and Rock And Roll Music.
Basically it's a wonderful CD, all original recordings 1962-1970 plus California Dreamin' from 1986, watch out for some typical Byrds like guitar playing from Roger McGuinn, it's unmissiable!

A great collection from the most consistently harmonic American group of the 1960's. Brian Wilson is a genius in the songwriting department and there is not a lot of padding on this album as the hits just keep flowing with the likes of 'Good Vibrations', the gorgeous 'God Only Knows' 'Darling' and 'Do It Again' all worthy of high praise in my opinion. Buy this and wallow in nostalgia.

One of many hits best offs , this one has most hits on, but no california saga or lady Lynda or Kokomo and for a british fans you might want to get another hits album with them on, there version of california dreaming is a bit pointless mind you , not a patch on mamas and papas original but still 5 stars for what is on here .
