This first album of Theatre of Tragedy is a very good beginning on their discography, not many band had a such way of introducing themselves. A more perfect sequel of this album is 'Velvet Darkness they fear', stronger, with better production. This one is less strong, instruments like violin and piano have an importance that it's not so appreciated on other albums. We can also see their primary essence, very medieval, a sound with those typical little mistakes that an amateur band does but at the same time, it sounds credible. There are incredible lyrics such as 'Dying - I only feel Apathy', incredible voices from Liv in 'Hollow-heartéd, heart-departéd', atmospheric songs like 'A Distance there is' & 'To these words I beheld no Tongue' and then, the typical plays, in which they have confirmed years later their status, like 'A Hamlet for a Slothful Vassal' (the most catchy song), 'Cheerful Dirge' & 'Sweet art thou'. Don't miss it!
