I have a small confession to make. I bought this CD primarily because I was acquainted with the pianist Julian Milford during our study for the Bar Exams. I thought I should finally get round to listening to one of his recorded performances.

It is simply excellent. The mood is captured perfectly and each note from both instruments seems coaxed rather than forced in a manner that only the most dedicated professionals seem to be able to achieve: the violin and piano seem to be melded with the players.

When played through a stock car CD player battling with road noise it is vibrant enough, when played in a quiet home, away from distractions through a half-way decent hi-fi it is even better.

I am not one for listening to 'proper' music simply as a sound-track to another activity, there are plenty of pop choices for that.

This CD deserves to be listened to when there is nothing to distract, save perhaps a good red wine, so every note can be heard.

Excellent work indeed.

Edward Elgar has to be the best British Composer that we have ever produced, although his well known "Land of hope and Glory, (which doesn't appear on this CD) the beutiful peices that do, are very English in essence, played beutifully by the violinist Lydia Mordkovitch and piano played by Julian Milford. The whole CD takes the listener back to a beautiful England of old. it is difficult to state the peices that are the best loved because every one has it's own merit. The smaller peices Salute d'amour,op.12, and my favouriteChansonde matin Op. 15 No.2 I heard this peice as a small child, not familiar with classical music then, but it left an imprint in my mind that leaves goose pimples every time i hear it. not to say the other peices are not as well loved. this CD is a must for any Romantic Classical Collection

This was the only retailer offering this hard-to-find gem from Elgar at a realistic price. Wonderful music, brilliantly played by all concerned. Chris Clough.

This is a beautiful piece. Together with the rest of Elgar's contemplative works it provides some profound experience. Use in on a quiet night.

Playing of silky sweetness: the Violin Sonata and Sospiri in particular are stunningly memorable.
