This is a very special album by one of jazz's most underrated giants. Backed by the magnificent bass playing of Ron Carter and the intelligent drumming of Al Foster this album is a delight from the first note until the last, exiting at up tempo and sensitive and moving in the ballads this is small group jazz as good as it gets.
Somehow over the years Joe's playing has escaped my notice even though he is a sideman on many of my favourite albums, I am now having a great deal of fun catching up with his work as a leader, and this one is one of his best.

Most CD's include some padding, there is not a dud track on this twofer. Henderson is in top form, and Ron Carter's inventive bass is worth the price on its own. Recording quality is superb on this RVG re-master. No Joe Henderson fan should be without this.

In every way the music/playing is as close to perfection as possible and it doesn't happen often. The two separate CDs. parts one and two. have more tracks than this CD.

If you like Joe,you will dig this. While not always easy listening, repeated listening is much rewarded with burning intensity, interplay and virtuosity !

This recording of Joe Henderson with an ALL STAR trio: Al Foster & Ron Cater is a landmark recording and even more so now that Mr Henderson is sadly no longer with us! The recording is made in the very relaxed setting of one of New York City's oldest & famous jazz clubs - The Village Vanguard. Joe Henderson & Co are playing a mixure of standards and original music. When you hear this group you never at any point miss the presence of a pianist or gutarist. The saxophone trio format dates back to legendary Lester Young in the early 1940's and adopted later on by the likes of Sonny Rollins and Lucky Thompson. Then ressurected in the late 80's and 90's by Branford Marsalis and Joshua Redman
The trio here weaves their way through a variety of contrasting material here including selections by Thelonious Monk: Boo Boo's Birthday, As Me Now and Friday 13th. Then there are some old standards like Stella By Starlight and All The Things You Are, plus a very funky Ron Carter tune called Loose Change. Also included here is a very classic performance of the 1960's Sam Rivers tune called Beatrice! This Double CD edition is great as you now have both parts of these amazing live performances from these great jazz masters playing at their peak taking you with them on their journey into the familiar as well as the unknown.
