Here's a display of the Latin-American side of Dizzy Gillespie's music. Every track has a touch of Cuba, Brazil or some other sunny place. It's a cheerful album comprising a mixture of live and studio recordings 1954-64. It provides textbook examples of how to play worthwhile jazz in a Latin mode.

`Manteca' is by Dizzy's big band. The other selections are by his small groups which include at various times Candido Camero, James Moody, Lalo Schifrin, Junior Mance and Sonny Stitt. On the opening track the trumpet sound is a shade distorted, and elsewhere on the album the sound is occasionally slightly less than perfect but this is only really noticeable on headphones.

Generally it's a very agreeable 56-minute programme ending on a high with an absolute show stopper - a ten minute version of Jobim's `Chega De Saudade (No More Blues)' recorded live in the south of France in the summer of '62. What a scorcher!
