John Tavener the UK 20th Century " holy minimalist" composer who passed away in 2013, composed some powerful devotional music. So it is here with with a fine collection of five works that feature the cello and voice at its core. Steven Is series the cellist had recorded with Tavener before probably most notably on the commercially successful The Protecting Veil in 1987, and here reaches the same peaks of spiritual expression in satisfying mainly slow contemplative music. in order the 5 works here are for cello and choir, for cello and strings, soprano and cello, string quartet and finally for solo cello. varied in sounds but unifrom in devotional sacred music appeal. this cd is a love/hate cd i would venture , its definitely a must if your a Christian or have faith in general but perhaps too ponderous for those of a secular persuasion looking for more immediate thrills in your music.
Along with Estonia composer Arvo Part, and James MacMillan some of the most powerful 20th Century music dedicated to the almighty. Strongly recommended 4 stars going on 5.
