I didn't expect the original score to sound so good as it does. Before I played it, I read the liner notes' apologetic admission that in places the sound quality reflected the deterioration of the master tapes that were, after all, over 40 years old. However, I was stunned by the rich stereo and the rumbling basses, low and menacing and sounding as fresh as yesterday. The only real problem that surfaces now and again is with the heavy percussion: this seems a little distant and muffled in one or two places. If you like or love the music of Bernard Herrmann, this is compulsory purchase. It is the definitive edition of one of his greatest scores.
This is a magnificent cd. Easily takes you back into the movie. The CD warns that there are changes between stereo and mono tracks due to how the recordings were made and that there are times you can hear coughs, pages turning, and dropped objects due to the re-mastering picking up all sounds. That happens with a lot of remastered soundtracks though so nothing new for this CD.
Well worth purchasing if you a Hitch or Herrmann fan.
Great big sound to accompany Hitch's gig-feel film., A most impressively orchestrated soundtrack which has been well engineered. Great to be able to buy film music such as this at long last. More please!
