Light and Heavy: The Best of Iron Butterfly

Although not well known in the UK during their heyday, Iron Butterfly were one of the biggest selling psychedelic rock bands in America during the late '60's, with a sound that encompassed fuzzed-out guitar drones, proto-heavy rock, pop, psychedelia, and towards the end, classic hard rock.
On their 4 studio albums from 1968 to 1970, Iron Butterfly issued 33 tracks, 20 of which are featured here alongside the non-album 45 "I Can't Help But Deceive You Little Girl", although the classic "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" (by far their best known track) is included in its heavily edited single version, not the 17 minute album version.
The tracks run in chronological order, tracing the band's development from the first rumblings of proto-heaviness ("Iron Butterfly Theme"), the glory years of their 2 most successful albums - 1968's psych/rock classic "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" and 1969's more melodic & expansive "Ball" - through to 1970's "Metamorphosis", by which time the psychedelic trimmings were largely jettisoned in favour of no-frills hard rock. Iron Butterfly were never one-dimensional, with each album displaying equal amounts of light and shade, perfectly in tune with the times.
1971's excellent 45 "Silly Sally" is not included, nor anything from 1970's "Live" (no big deal as most of tracks are featured here in their studio versions) or their two 1975 comeback albums (which are easily available elsewhere and not thought of as "classic"-era Butterfly).
There are informative sleevenotes, discographical information and chart placings for albums and singles. This great value compilation is the perfect introduction to one America's big-hitters of the period. Try it.

Iron Butterfly is chiefly remembered for In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida which features here in its short version. For more background see reviews on Amazon.com site. This disc presents quite a representative selection of the output of Iron Butterfly in its many incarnations, including some tracks from my favourite album: Metamorphosis. If you are new to this band, this CD is an excellent introduction and may spur you on to get to know more of their music. Recommended.

i actually mainly got the CD for 'in-a-gadda-da-vida' and (i know its sad but) mainly because of the simpsons...
but im glad i did... its a good album, with good music, and well worth a buy!
If you dont know what im talking about when i refer to in-a-gadda-da-vida featuring in the simpsons then your missing out on a quality episode... you should watch more TV

Iron Butterfly are a band that have been somewhat forgotten. The truth is that they were one of the most popular bands of their time. For those of you who have never heard them before, you might remember the film 'Manhunter' where the Iron Butterfly track 'In-a-gadda-da-vida' was the backround music to the final conflict.
Okay, not all their tracks are as good as 'Gada-da-vida', but not many tracks from any band are as good as 'Gada-da-vida'! At around seventeen minutes long, the track has it all, including psychedelic drum solo's and a catchy chorus.
The band's work became a benchmark and encapsulates an era in rock music. Buy this today before Amazon realize that they are selling it too cheap!!
