This disc came out at around the same time as one by Dawn Upshaw covering a similar range of Rodgers and Hart songs. There is little wrong with the Upshaw disc, but it uses modern cut-down studio arrangements. This record uses the original theatrical orchestrations, by Hans Spialek, Roy Webb and others. You hear these songs as Rodgers and Hart intended. In addition you hear them played by a world class orchestra: the LSO - on top form. Everyone, von Stade, conductor John McGlinn, the orchestra and the Ambrosian Singers treat these songs as little masterpieces - which many of them are.
Classical singers are not guaranteed to make good recordings of popular songs, but this recording really works. Mrs von Stade does an excellent job in singing these Rodgers and Hart standards and is given excellent support from John McGlinn's orchestrations.
