Another musician whose life sadly and tragically ened early. There are many compilations / "Best of" CD's around but as a 20 track / single CD this is one of ( if not the) best options both in terms of the music selection ( all of the major hits?) and the sound quality. Transfer from analogue tape to CD nearly always brightens the sound - this can be overdone ( useful note - in analogue days 1% harmonic distortion was acceptable and gave a warm sound - hence the preference many had/ still have for vinyl which sounds particulalry good through older valve equipment ; 0.1% digital distortion becomes unacceptable to the human ear - hence care is needed in its reproduction) . For this CD ( and others that MCA have transferred from original tapes) the sound seems just about right and reflects the warmth of the originals , whilst getting rid of the plips and plops of vinyl. It appears that this CD is more readily available from US sources. For completists , check out the 2 CD ( 50th Anniversary) version "The very best of Buddy Holly and the Crickets" ( 2008 - Universal) which covers not only the hits but B sides and some rarities. There is also a 3CD collection out there.
The tracks on this compilation CD have been beautifully re-mastered from the original tapes - the recording of True Love Ways is jaw droppingly stunning - if you only have one Buddy Holly CD in your collection it should be this one - believe me !
4 and a 1/2 stars really, as you get only 20 tracks, but they are among the finest remastered tracks available, depite being re done in 1985. The reason is the sound engineer was Steve Hoffman, google him, he makes BH seem to be in your living room. He was a pioneer of finding, then using the original first order master tapes. Two tracks are in stereo, apparently the other 2 stereo tracks, ( BH only did 4 ), were lost at the time, fortunately they have now been found. I will make no comment about his early death or the influence of his music as others have said it so many times, but if sonic quality is important this is a must buy I also recommend, Gold (2CD) 50 tracks on 2 CD's
