This is a suberb compilation covering the work of the Kinks between 1966 and 1971. It does a great job of picking the best songs they recorded over that period -- hit singles, tracks from five of the finest albums by anyone during the late '60s (Face to face, Something Else, Village Green, Arthur, and Lola), and some teriffic non-album b-sides. Many of the songs here haven't been available on any CD until some recent re-releases; but still, they can't be found all in one place anywhere else. This double-CD dislays the high level of musical and lyrical sophistication the Kinks had to offer, and it demostrates quite convincingly why the Kinks were so influential.

There are a lot of tracks here that are not good enough compared to the ones that are left off. The compilers seemed to know that these tracks aren't good enough but put them on anyway, the evidence being that the second half has far more of these unworthy tracks. All of the following don't belong
4. Holiday in Waikiki
5. Willesden Green
6. This Is Where I Belong
14. Did You See His Name?
Disc: 2
1. Fancy
2. Wonderboy
4. King Kong
5. Mr. Pleasant
6. God's Children
7. Death of a Clown
9. Mindless Child Of Motherhood
10. Polly
11. Big Black Smoke
12. Susannah's Still Alive
13. She's Got Everything

These American albums contain a number of tracks that were not released in the UK at the time. Some excellent, some good, others not released for a good reason. Probably only for completists loike me
