This is my favourite 242 album. It was the first album by them I've listened to, so I might be biased a little bit. This one was, and still is, ahead of its time. It sounds fresh everytime I listen to it. It doesn't belong in the Eighties, Nineties, or Naughties. It has very unique sound, lush, orchestral, melodic and emotional. Is it industrial? Maybe. But it's Music first and foremost. It will remain one of the best albums ever for me. I consider Up Evil and Off to be a double album, which it actually kind of is. So this 'double' album is a real aural treat. It came out it 1993 - simply unbelievable, because hasn't dated one bit.

Hard loud techno beats and drum mixed with menacing vocals and pounding rhythm. Those who enjoyed Front by Front will enjoy this.

Front 242's 1993 album 06:21:03:11 Up Evil (the numbers corrispond to letters of the alphabet kiddies) was a bit of a controversial departure for the Belgian electro godfathers. They had already complicated their minimalism years before, with this album they brought in a few new songwriters and a LOT of guitar and embraced rock. The songs are that bit harsher, that bit quicker, the lyrics that BIT more pretetious... but at the time, for me, it sounded fresh... well it wasn't fresh. It was tipping nods all left right and center but at a time when techno hit the bigtime the guys that made electro techno were doing metal. The solitary single relased from the album 'Religion' got mix treatment from Prodigy punky rave terrorist Liam Howlett (The one that that doesn't dance) while the track 'Crapage' got molested by Ambient weirdos The Orb.
The album itself split the fans, critics and even bandmembers into two camps. Some hated the new sound, with shouts of "That's not the Front 242 I know". 242 vocalist Jean Luc De Myer apparently didn't recognise his own voice and dubbed it "Rubbish", on the other side people like me loved it. Perhaps I'm a tad biased in that it was the first 242 album I heard, but I was won over immedietly by the shotgun electro beats and guitar sqealing of opener "Crapage" and kept heald the whole way through. One of those albums that begs to be played loud. If faced with an unbiased ear should impress rockers and ravers alike. The same year the band released a sister album 05:22:09:12 Off. Which took the band in the opposite direction with hard techno tunes and some ambient soundscapes. For many the two albums have to considered a package. Demons & Angels. They can only be really recognised when you have experienced both.
