Great set of performances in bright early digital sound. A bit light in the bass - but what grabs one's attention is the playing. For once the VPO has left out the heavy lunch and packed all their energy into the recording session.

To no avail. The best sounding and Hungarian bees knees is the 1985 Hungaroton recording from Ivan Fischer and thd Budapest Festival Orchestra putting the F into festival.

Plenty of bass and lots more oomph. But don't confuse with the 1990s versions from Fischer on Philips and endless reissues including a dubious SACD which sounds not as good as the original CD.

You will have a job to find the original Hungaroton CD -- but if you do JUMP ON IT....

...and start dancing!

What a tragic loss to the world of music - Abbado at his best.

Used to have this on LP when originally released in the 80's and still love all 21 dances. To my ears these are the best performances around - no.4 is sublime. Highly recommended.

The Hungarian Dances are fabolous, (all of them), and the one with Claudio Abbado as director is the best I've heard.
