Early Bon Jovi, quite a dated sound now, before the influx of big budget production and hit writing collaborators. A decent window into how the potential was spotted. "Runaway" is the single from this where you can definitely hear the future of the band. A must for fans, a later album to explore for newcomers to the band.

Ah... Bon Jovi. Livin' on a Prayer, Shot Thru the Heart, It's My Life, right? But every band has to start somewhere, and for them, it was Runaway, the iconic track that opens this album and shot them - or more accurately, Jon Bongiovi, who cut that particular piece (partly written by some rather more experienced players on the rock scene) together in some spare studio time with the help of a bunch of by-the-hour sessionists before even getting an actual band together.

The rest of the album features the extended talents of most of the familiar crew from the middle years of the band, having been hurridly thrown together and landing on a winning formula more or less by luck, and a greater proportion of music and lyrics from Jon's own pen. It's a relatively winning formula. You can't call it a perfect album by any stretch, but there's a lot of good songs here with a few standouts (Roulette, the misleadingly titled Shot Through The Heart, etc), all the players show a lot of youthful talent, charm and above all drive, and it meshes together quite well. It's also, perhaps surprisingly, excellently engineered, and very nice to listen to with a set of good headphones.

The same can't be said of the Remastered version, where basically all that's happened is that someone's run a fairly needless noise reduction filter over the whole thing, and then subjected it to a brutal and merciless run through the dynamic compressor. The original was slightly quiet, but nothing that couldn't be fixed by turning up the volume, and had nice wide dynamics, a good sense of space and every instrument sat together well and could be picked out individually, even after bouncing down to tape and being played in the car... which, for what is otherwise a Big Dumb Hair Rock album, is quite a treat and only aids the hair-shaking efforts. The remaster replaces this with a horrible, muddy wall of overdriven noise that will have you reaching for the volume knob in order to turn it *down*.

Strangely, I think I like this rather more than 7800 Farenheit (which got a bit samey halfway through - I still wouldn't be able to name all the individual tracks with a gun to my head), and it's nearly on a level with the mighty Slippery and New Jersey, though it can't hold a candle to Keep The Faith.

If you're a casual fan of BJ and want to explore a bit more, or just need some fresh fuel for your early 80s "hard" hairbrush-rock fire, it's well worth a listen. Just, please, make sure you're buying the original 1982 version...

I find this album great to listen to all the songs (exept maby Break out) are great and Runaway stands out in the history of 80's Rock music. The only thing that disapointed me about this album was its 9 track list. I understand that this was there debute and would have been itching to finish it, but one or two more studio songs couldn't have hurt surely?
