TOP 500 REVIEWERon 23 June 2013
Fans of jazz piano should snap this disc up. Phineas Newborn jr (1931-1989) is by no means a household name but on the evidence of this superb disc alone, he should be. Combining superb technique with an ability to swing that could match any of the greats (Powell, Peterson,Tatum etc) he makes music that is at once as daringly virtuosic as it is entertaining and varied. Matched here with Ray Brown on bass and Elvin Jones on drums on this session from 1969 Newborn traverses Gospel inflected Blues (Harlem Blues) to charming ballads (the lovely 'Little Girl Blue' ) and more straight -ahead piledrivers such as 'Rays Idea', where Phineas effortlessly shows us a few of tricks, all done with great taste and lightening speed dexterity. If further proof were needed give Newborns take on 'Stella by Starlight' a spin and you'll understand at one go,the full extent of this mans genius. We hear fantastic pianism but also real feeling and imagination that helps bring alive a tune that may have come stale to us with over familiarity.

This set really deserves your attention, especially if you haven't heard Newborn before. The recorded sound is excellent, the level of performance by all parties, outstanding and the material, first rate. Buy it, you won't regret doing so.

This album was recorded in 1969, but not released for about 10 years later. In fact enough material for two albums was recorded in "one sitting" on 12 - 13 February. Presumeably first choice selection was released as "Please Send Someone To Love".

First choice or not, this is record for any Newborn devotee. Newborn was a genius pianist, but rather under-recorded. These 7 tracks feature Ray Brown (whom PN had previously recorded) and Elvin Jones and a varied choice of tunes from his delightful "Harlem Blues", through an unusual version of "Sweet And Lovely" (my favourite track") and "Tenderly" to Horace Silver's "Cookin' At The Continental".
