This live recording was released as 'Ahmed's Wild Dream' (on Play it Again Sam/Solid) from a gig in Holland...It offers a good selection of Gun Club tracks- a meeting of the blues and punk-rock...The intro & opener both come from the glam-metal of 'The Las Vegas Story'- one of the many GC highpoints- 'Walkin' the Beast' is a sleazy themetune...Tracks from the then-new 'Pastoral Hide & Seek' are up next- 'I Hear your heart singin' as good as anything on 'Mother Juno'- and sounds like Thin White Rope covering 'Paegent--era REM...'Sexbeat' is an obvious high point, as are the other 'Fire of Love' tracks, 'Preachin the Blues' & 'Goodbye Johnny' (the latter stretched out a la Crazy Horse/Hendrix from the original). 'Stranger in Town' is a bit dull- not as good as the 'Stranger' from 'Las Vegas Story'; while 'Black Hole' has slightly tuneless vocals added by Romi...'Go Tell the Mountain' is the centrepiece of this show- and has some of the best guitar playing I've ever heard. The passion in that voice, those blues- the myth of Americana...The cover of 'Little Wing' is faithful- and is followed by an epic take on 'Mother Juno's 'Yellow Eyes'- the lovesong giving way to a guitar burnout...There are other tracks from the classic 'Mother Juno': a pulsing 'Lupita Screams' and a tender, focused 'Port of Souls'. This is a great live album, anyone who likes Hendrix/the blues should check it out. It should also appeal to those interested in bands such as Lift to Experience, ...And you will know us by the trail of the Dead and 16 Horsepower...As good live album as any...
