The Lyra Angelica is wonderful music. It is calm, reflective and unhurried music which is instantly understandable and enjoyable. It is not only beautiful but very 'spiritual' music: every movement seems to breathe something of the other world; the last movement is surely about the Resurrection, but it is by no means 'religious' or 'churchy' music - it is just deeply moving. It is beautifully played and well recorded.
This is a wonderful, refreshingly different CD. I had no Alwyn in my collection prior to this purchase. Following a BBC Radio 3 broadcast of one movement of the Harp Concerto, I was sufficiently impressed to buy this. The music is very 'English' with shades of Tippett, E.J. Moeran, Vaughan William and others (no doubt some foolish comments about 'cowpat' music will surface), but I love the almost 'impressionist' feel the whole cd has. There is an unusual magic and very intense atmosphere here and whilst it does take a few listenings to get hold of the melodic lines this really is a purchase worth making, I absolutely love it. Although my principle motivation for buying it was the Harp Concerto, the whole CD is superb!!!
If you don't know the harp concerto, then it is a work well worth getting to know. However, to my ears the performance of the piece on Naxos is better than that here - and so is the recording. Furthermore, the Naxos disc is cheaper! The other pieces are very easy on the ear but suffer too from a rather congested sound.
