I have a number of recordings of this extraordinarily powerful work. it is intensely personal, vast and visionary and I love it. Although there are numerous recordings it is so difficult to have every part perfect, rather like Gerontius. Perhaps the nearest to perfection is Andre Previn with a few others close behind. This recording is a fitting tribute to Bryden Thomson and so nearly 5 stars. The orchestra, chorus, soprano, interpretation and conductor could not be bettered but it is slightly let down by the baritone who I believe seems to be in competition with the soprano rather than blending in with her. Perhaps this is because he does not have a powerful voice, a prerequisite for this work, so that he seems to be straining and forcing out his part. Yvonne Kenny sings her heart out and clearly loves the work and she has a beautiful voice with no throbbing vibrato which spoils the work in other recordings. Buy it for the performance and Yvonne Kenny and you will not be disappointed.
