I have lived with this album for at least a year before reviewing it. If I could only save one of my many Stan Getz CDs in a fire - this would be it. If I could save two then I'd grab 'Anniversary' too. I am not so fond of his Bossa Nova period but this is not Bossa Nova - it is laid back sumptuous late evening jazz from his quartet recorded in 1982 in San Francisco. I can highly recommend it! His playing has a beautiful tone and the whole mood is chilled and relaxed. Wonderful!

Music is useful. As well as being just a listening pleasure, certain CDs further validate their existence by their usefulness. It may seem ridiculous to some , but at the gym I work out sometimes to Cotrane's 'Transition' which contains some terrifying sax playing of awesome intensity. My pecs are better for it....but you wouldn't put it on while you're trying to get your wife in the mood. Driving on the M25 needs good natured motoring rythms....often by Little Feat....sometimes Coldplay....but the best time of the day, when the kids are in bed...the supper is simmering....the sun is setting...perhaps a glass of wine is poured....at that moment it takes a very special kind of music to further enhance an already beautiful but often trying moment. The opening track from this CD 'Spring Is Here' switches the day off and pours you gently into a world of lyricism unmatched in this genre. Despite the bittersweet song is almost impossible to feel anything other than wonder at the beauty of Stan's tone on this overlooked CD of down tempo Getz.At the risk of invoking a cliche...the band are faultless and sympathetic , but this is the work of a man who blows air down a brass pipe and makes you feel better and more hopeful about the world. An example of one of mankinds greatest achievements.
