I bought this book because I wanted to learn the grammar side of Latvian and not just learn phrases without understanding their meaning. The lessons cover far too many grammatical points at once-you are left feeling swamped by the amount of information you are expected to take in at one sitting. There are not enough exact translations of the Latvian dialogue and the exercises are too difficult sometimes covering points that haven't been covered yet. I like languages and have found Latvian difficult as there are 6 or 7 cases and 6 declension classes; the book assumes that you are fully conversant with all these, and other, grammatical terms and rushes through the grammar far too fast. If you want to learn Latvian you will need to consult other books and online resources (there are loads if you search Google)as this book is far too technical for a beginner and, of course, there is no recorded media to teach correct pronunciation.
This book doesn't handle the grammar very well, with concepts introduced without enough explanation for someone without a background as a linguist. This was the first book I tried and I really struggled with it. Afterwards I read "Complete Latvian", which is available in Kindle with audio features included, and this was by far the best product on the market. Don't waste valuable time on a book that doesn't quite do the job.
