A well written and illustrated account of he war, more an introduction to the war than a full campaign history, of how the French carved out their empire in Viatnam. The account is well supported by clear maps, which is just as well as my knowledge of the area was non existant.
I am becoming a fan of Olenders books. After his book on the Chino-Japanese war, this is another nice volume on a relatively little known conflict. If you are interested in 19th century naval warfare, this is absolutely a good buy.
A comprensive study of the Sino-French War of 1884-1885. Including ships data of both Chinese and French navies, and line and profile drawings of some of the participated major ships. Although some of the photos and paintings were reproduced in poor quality, it is still good value for money for those who are interested in that period of maritime history.
