Teach yourself Bengali in one month... If you want to learn how to read the 'mystical philosophy' of Bankim Chandra in Bengali script then this is the book for you! If, however, like myself, you want to learn how to speak Bengali then this certainly is not the book for you. The few Bengali phrases given in roman alphabet are not accompanied with any advice regarding pronunciation. Cheap and understandably so!
I bought the book because i'm trying to pick the language up quickly. I'm 18 and interested in different languages. This book states you can learn bengali in a month but i found this very hard. The ordering is weird because it feels completely random however, being random words and not put into any organised manor, i found it easy to pick up a few common words. The vowels, constants and the alphabet are all given at the start however personally, this made it look more intimidating which made it harder. However, some people will probably appreciate this. The book was very cheap and for what i've found useful out of it - i'd say it was value for money. I have learnt bengali best by working with people who talk the language and having to talk back in Bengali. I am still finding it very hard to learn the scripting though but i have now chosen to get personal help for this.
considering the price i got this book eagerly, i found it was quite cheaply produced but in line with the price, inside i found a wealth of information and helpful exercise's, now i dont know if i found it helpful because i am by origin bengali?.i had never learned my mother tongue properly as i was raised in the uk from an early age. the few occasions that i have read it i found it to be helpful.
