I was beginning to think I it was just me who found large chunks of this book, dull and pedestrian until I read the review from "a reader in North America" . I could not agree more. The book is great when it is descriptive , whether describing the horrors and cruelties of partisan struggle or the frozen landscape. It all falls horibly apart as soon as any character opens his or her mouth. It contains the most clunking, leaden and improbable dialogue ever written. I would quote page numbers as examples but readers won't necessarily have the same edition as me, but just open it at any point and find any conversation. On the other hand "The Master and Margarita" is indeed a truly wonderful novel
