Great book. Bought second hand and came without the cd, so it's pretty useless. Edit: Seller ThriftBooks issued a full refund (item price + shippng) when explained and "There is no need to return the item we sent. We suggest donating any unwanted items to a local charity or donation center." So 5 stars for ThriftBooks USA.
There are few words in this book; it's all about the grids. Just like Carsten Nicolai's packaging and music on his raster-Noton record label, this has lovely design. It is nicely printed in black and grey on off-white paper (sustainably published too). I wouldn't say this is an 'essential reference' for pattern designers - I would reserve that honour for Grunbaum & Shephard's book Tilings and Patterns, from which some of the grids are taken. Nevertheless, it's a well-produced package that does exactly what it says: the 294 grids are ordered from simple to complex, and this arrangement is indexed with titles and mathematical notation (an explanation of which can be found in the G&S book). What makes the whole package especially fun is the accompanying CD, which contains PDF and SVG versions of 298 grids (that's 4 more than in print - I've still not worked out where they come from, or which ones they are!). It reminds me of the geometric colouring books I has as a kid. This book is essentially the same thing for grown-ups!
