A lovely, & slightly weird book.
Nearly all photos, most of them full page (14x18cm) of strange traditional European wildman performers in costume. The photos are simple shots of the performers in the landscape looking like monsters from a Jan svankmayer movie, or perhaps a particulary scary episode of Dr Who. The text is fairly concise - a short introduction (6 pages), an overview of the ritual costumes in Europe (7 pages) & 20 pages of information on the photos with details of the festivals.
A lovely book, just a shame it's all in German, fingers crossed for an affordable English language edition (currently this edition is 1/4 of the price of the English version).

Not in English but to be honest you won't buy it for the text. Buy it for the stunning images of folk costume. There are some amazing costumes photographed here from all over Europe. Worth a study

The author has made a fantastic start, has just scratched the surface of a subject that is in a way taboo in the "First World": our living past which precedes and perhaps will outlive the current era of Christian spirituality. The formal Church has tried to suppress the expressions of the old European human-animal-vegetation relationship, but it survives in small traces all over the continent.
I think this work will trigger a lot more similar studies of this kind. Those who live where these figures survive are lucky to have a numinous figure walk their everyday streets. "Brown Bear still walks the New York pavements"

Crazy to see how these ancient traditions are still alive in Europe. Beautifully photographed by Charles Freger and accompanied by background explanations to complete the stories.

i was lucky enough to be photographed in this very stylish book. im involved in the 'burryman' tradition that happens in queensferry scotland.

charles visited and beautifully documents a wide variety of european countries that observe rural traditions, the only common theme is the bizarre and a unique connection to the natural world. a brief overview of each tradition and process is also included.

each photo frames an individual within their own particular landscape.

im reminded of the catina in star wars, the mighty boosh and jodorowsky - top class.

Got it in the wrong language! Feel like this wasn't made very obvious on it's posting. Apart from that, quality of the book was great.
