Gives concise explanations and great examples of what to look for in a film.

I was always disappointed in film reviews that only tell the subject of the film and a final opinion from the reviewer (whether he/she liked it or not). What I was looking for is an example of a proper analysis especially for films generally recognized as "classics" just to understand what is special about them. This is exactly what this book is about: how to understand the film better. Gives a full case study by analyzing "Rebecca" by Alfred Hitchcock as well as certain sequences from other films (e.g. "Mulholland Drive" by David Lynch).

It's also very instructive if you have to write a film review yourself (this is basically why I bought it in the first place).

A must read if you're a film club member.
