I bought the kindle version of Fir Lodge to see what the ‘buzz’ was about. Once I’d established a feel for the rhythm of Sean’s style of writing, I was hooked. With likeable characters, hidden film references and humor that warranted a chuckle or 2 out loud along with typically expected guessing games to try to preempt the storyline, this was an absolute treat. Having enjoyed the race to the end and left eager to devour the next book in the series, I purchased the paperback version also to ‘restart’ the most enjoyable read I’ve discovered in a while.
This book is so so good! I bought it because I like kinda weird but kinda relatable books, and this is both of those things! The storyline is very different to other things I’ve read, and whilst it look me a few chapter to get into it, I was hooked. It’s a compelling, fast paced, and energetic story with elements that definitely leave you asking questions and wanting the next instalment already. I thoroughly enjoyed the pop culture references throughout and whilst you don’t need to recognise them all to enjoy the book, they felt like Easter eggs for the genre.
There are A LOT of characters and I didn’t fully get my head around the friend group and who was dating who, but it felt like my own friend group where you can’t remember why you’re all friends, you just know you are. I’m genuinely sad I’ve finished it, and look forward to the next book immensely!
I'll be honest, I kept putting off from reading the first volume of Fir Lodge.
Why you may ask?
It's because I know the author personally and I was concerned that I may not like the book.
But thankfully, those concerns were unnecessary.
For Sean's first ever novel, Fir Lodge volume 1 really is a well written and funny book. It's Groundhog Day but with a twist. With believable characters, dialogue, references from comics and movies (two of the characters are named Hal and Kara) and with a cliffhanger of an ending, Fir Lodge really is an enjoyable read.
And I must say, I enjoyed the way Sean introduced the character Jerry!
I ordered this and got next day delivery, so glad it came because not been able to put it down. It has all the nice little Easter egg references that appeal to my inner geek! So far so very good and can’t wait to get back and stuck in to see where this book takes me next!
Amazing book. If you love sci fi/crime/thriller with a few geeky references for good measure, then this is the book for you. Great twists and turns, keep you saying 'just one more chapter'. A real page turner. Very much enjoyed. Looking forward to the next one!
Wow. Just wow. There is just something so magical about this book. Sean has an amazing way of pulling you into a story and making you never want to put it down.
This isn’t my usual genre, but the story intrigued me so I wanted to check it out. And boy, did it not disappoint. From the amusing pop culture references to the mystery surrounding the restarters. It was enthralling. I was captivated by their dilemmas and the real human emotion Sean managed to inject into the story. This author is one to watch out for. He’s going to do big things. I just know it.
Since the age of fourteen, I've been an avid fan of a certain trilogy of films that involves a DeLorean. This book made me feel that way again.
The story flows so well and you get a good feel for the characters , I particularly enjoyed the dialogue between the main protagonists throughout the novel. If you enjoy films or books relating to this genre, it's so well worth a read. I personally cannot wait for the next instalment!
This first novel has everything: humour, sadness, tension, suspense and ends on a real cliffhanger!
I already have withdrawal symptoms! Well done, Mr McMahon - I salute you.
Funny, fast-paced, intriguing and surprising, Sean McMahon's first novel in the Restarter trilogy is a brilliant read. The characters are relatable and their dialogue and relationships completely believable. The core idea behind 'Restarting' evolves really naturally with the characters figuring out the rules at the same time as you do - there's nothing worse than dopey protagonists!
The ending sets up Book 2 really well with a cliff-hanger that's unpredictable, exciting and perfectly-timed. I can only hope it comes out soon!
