Held my 3 year-old enraptured for 30 minutes—amazing!

As a doting grandma to two dino-daft little boys, I’m always on the lookout for new dinosaur-themed books, toys and games to feed their infatuation. And this ‘Where’s Wally’ type book is just brilliant. Maybe a little bit too challenging for the lower end of the recommended 2 to 4 years age range, but still a fun and fascinating adventure regardless of a child’s ability to find the hidden dinosaurs.
What’s really appealing about it is that it actually tells a story as well: Someone went and left the window open and all the dinosaurs escaped. Can we find them and bring them safely home?
Each spread features a different setting, such as the park, a funfair, an office, a picnic, a classroom, the playground and so on. The aim it to find the 2 dinosaurs—all of them different—hidden in each scene. It’s not easy, but I find that giving some hints like suggesting to look for a specific colour really helps. My 3 year-old especially likes that all the dinos have cool names, which he already knows off by heart, all 27 of them! I was a bit worried that the difficulty level would challenge their patience, especially of the 2 year-old, but with a bit of guidance and cajoling they’re happy to study each page closely for as long as necessary.
In terms of design, the book is attractive and colourful, with detailed illustrations that offer lots to talk about. For example, once they’ve found the dinos, you can get your little ones to look for other items on the page. It’s a great way to learn new words.
