Tore myself away from my normal historical Roman fiction to this the Templar era. Although it took a while to get into the book, it was well worth the effort. Good story line and plenty of action. Graphic descriptions of torture, I think were necessary in this book to relay the story of the well documented betrayal and the beginning of the demise of the Templar movement. The author captures the essence of this betrayal perfectly and leaves me wanting more. Thanks
The book largely revolves around the night, when the Templars were destroyed as a force in France - the 13th of October, 1307. It is a fictional account of a small group of Templars escaping / fighting their way out against the forces of French King Philip IV.
The book is fairly fast paced and reads well. In spite of many fighting scenes accompanying the escape, the book is nicely balanced, with a bit of back history of the protagonists, a soul searching element to accompany the end of the world as they have known it, etc.
You never get to know the complete back story of the characters or see their characters fully developed but that is also not the purpose of the book. At the same time there is enough of a glimpse to not have them appear one dimensional, so overall the mix is well chosen.
The fighting scenes are graphic and torture is described in some detail, so the book is perhaps not suited to younger teenagers or those with a queasy stomach.
Overall a nice fictional accompanyment to a historical event, with a grand finale several years after the event. If you are into historical fiction, Crusades or just enjoy a fast paced action novel, Dorsey's book is a good place to go.
What a change to read a story about the Templar's that shows them in a caring way. Give this book a try good fight scenes, comradeship of them escaping from the Kings of Frances troops, helping a lady of the night and she them. The sad part in the middle I will say not more
Couldn't put it down, a fast moving and enthralling story without the predictable outcomes that one comes to expect from so many novels now a days. A very well thought out plot backed up by history and a good style of writing.
