Sketching from the Imagination is a wonderful 320-page paperback collection of sketches from 50 artists. It's always a delight to look through other people sketches, especially the good ones, and there are plenty to see in this thick volume.

The sketches compiled are all drawn from imagination. There are scenes of fantasy, character and creature designs, some location art, sometimes whimsical drawings, loose sketches, detailed sketches, and other amazing line drawings. Majority I would say are still character and creature art. Most of the stuff in the book are good enough as concept art, actually in a sense they all are.

I like checking out the different styles and techniques. There are the cartoony stuff, superhero comics style, amazing pencil and pen hatching, shading, use of black, drawing on toned paper and more. Some you can see are done quickly and loose. Some are very elaborate with detailed designs and shading.

The artists are featured alphabetically. Each has around 6 pages of coverage with a brief commentary on why they sketch and their inspiration. It's not really an instructional book, more for sparks of inspiration. All the sketches also come with brief captions.

I collect a lot of sketchbooks, and I really enjoyed looking through this one.

It's an inspiring book for those who like art, and of course sketchbooks, and probably will get you inspired to start sketching.

If you like this sketchbook, check out some of the other sketchbooks mentioned in my comment section below.

This is a fantastic book to dip in and out of and to get inspiration from with summary from the artists about their work and thought processes. I have it amongst other compilation books that I visit regularly and would recommend this to those studying drawing and illustration of some kind as it a handy motivational tool when you're feeling mentally disengaged from drawing. The only criticism would be that some of the images have been blown up too large and aren't as crisp as most of the sketches in the book.

Just got this the other day, fantastic collection of so many artists sketches. Yes it isnt pages and pages of each artist but they are all stunning. Ideal if you want to see how other people get their ideas down on paper, or just want a resource to browse and then go looking else where for further work by the artists that you like the most.

Really inspirational work in this book. Although some work goes far beyond what I would call a sketch, and more into what is a finished piece of artwork.

Excellent presentation featuring a gorgeous selection of varied artists. Being an animator I tend to collect a lot of art books for inspiration on my illustrator side, but the order of this book makes for great get-in-get-out reference on different styles and approaches to concept sketching when doing research. All the artists being organised alphabetically by surname makes for good ease of access. Just ordered the recently released second volume and looking forward to them expanding this wonderful archive of work with a third book (possibly next year).

I've always loved sketches, even more than finished pieces.

And this book doesn't disappoint.

Some of the nicest sketches I've ever seen.

Ever thought how an artist thinks or wondered how to go about a creative process of telling a story with just a few lines on a piece of paper... You should look no further since in all its pages the book serves as an encyclopaedia of artists, and it will hopefully get more and more tomes. Insight into styles, influences, themes, details, presentation methods and diverse universe in which some sketches are set best describe the pages you will go through. The amount of "ink" that was used to make all the sketches is well worth the book.

I have found this book to be very useful as it is full of quality art work. I particularly like the wide range of styles and it serves as a great source of inspiration. The layout is fantastic, very informative and has a good choice in showcasing the different mediums used by the featured artists. The artists also write about their views and their approaches which I have enjoyed reading as it is interesting to delve into the minds of these talented artists.

A beautiful book. I keep going back to it and seeing new things each time. So many different styles too.

Besides all the amazing art work, the most interesting part for me was to be able to see a type of drawing that usually isn't suppose to be shared, as well having the chance to read so many different the stories and opinions of each individual artist.
It really is a unique book, since its not a compilation of final images, nor a technical book.
