I use this book a lot and had thought what it lacked was grams of CHO per 100g of food so it would be easier to be exact about the carb. content of my food portions. I have Type 1 Diabetes and use this to work out insulin doses. However the lists of g CHO/100g food are limited and the food photos less clear and perhaps a little smaller than in previous editions. I will stick to previous editions.
This is a great book. I purchased Carb & Calorie Counter for my brother who is diabetic. He says it is now his shopping 'bible' and has become invaluable for checking the dietary values of the food he consumes. The great news is: by using the book as a dietary guide, he has (literally within a few days) reduced his 'bloods' .... to such an extent that his nurse may shortly reassess his medication. I was so impressed by the amount of information contained in this book: the easy to read/understand format; clever illustrations and brilliant pictures also the portion/carb/cal guide, that I purchased a further two copies - one for myself and one for a friend who would like to reduce her weight. Although neither of us suffer from diabetes, we have found the book excellent as a carb and calorie guide (there are a few startling surprises!) This book is a 'must' for all those who would like to know the dietary values of everyday foodstuffs. It is a practically fool-proof guide for people of all ages, but especially those with diabetes or those of a 'certain age' who may need to evaluate and regulate their food consumption in order to keep fit and healthy. This guide has the approval of Diabetes UK and is a great 'tool', however, anyone requiring additional clarification, or taking medication, professional advice is recommended.
This is one of the best books I have seen. So often portion control is the key to diet eg for diabetics etc...but to many simply referring to weights and measures doesn't help and for many weighing a sausage or a couple of mushrooms is too much bother-discipline can falter. This book has hundreds of dishes photographed in different portion sizes with the calorific and carb breakdown. Instantly you can relate to the "right" sizes and combinations of food for your meals. Brilliant job.
Husband was told he was diabetic when he was losing weight didn't know this could happen. Two weeks to see practice nurse who used this book. Its great I can plan meals and ensure his carbs are low. He is on a six week course to learn about his health but this book answers all the question. I feel confident that with the information and great pictures we can keep his diabetes under control with diet.
Just diagnosed with diabetes requiring insulin. Saw this on the diabetes UK web site so bought it. Excellent. It not only contains all the composition of everyday foods it is full of pictures for all the food they cover which help with portion control as who knows without scales what a 75g Apple looks like. My friend has now bought it as part of a weight control diet as it is so useful. Most helpful book I have bought in my journey. It covers fast food also so everyone is included.
Recommended this by my Diabetic Specialist Nurse, Kim, who uses it a lot. She is brilliant, by the way !! I've found it invaluable when controlling carbs which in turn keeps the "sugars" under control. Already after 4 weeks have been able to reduce my meds and no adverse effects. Surprising how high some things are, like apples and bagels and jacket potatoes!!! Don't deny yourself food you enjoy , but with the help of the info in this book you can control your carbs intake and therefore your excess glucose. Once you know, you can keep tabs on them and I'm regularly below a daily total of 150 gms of carbs. When I understand that a max of 200 for someone with diabetes and 250 ish for others is a target it has helped me get on top of the whole sugar control thing. Currently averaging between 6.5 and 7 which is substantially lower than before, 8's and 9's not unusual.
I plan to gradually reduce meds as far as I can and this little book is a life saver.
I've tried to loose weight forever, all the diet gizmos blah blah. This is the definitive book for health and weight loss. Written by professionals who know what they are talking about. The brilliant thing about this book is that it gives calories/carbs/fat/ fibre/protein in relation to the weight of the foodstuff. The photos are smashing, I could go on. If you seriously want to change yourself for the better, then buy this.
It was advised to us to buy this book as we both need to lose some weight , and oh my god what an eye opener ! On the one hand it was a bit depressing when you see what Calories are in your favourite foods but on the other hand by having smaller portions we have both lost over half a stone so far after 4 weeks .
