First a little bit of history and back ground behind the character and their story. Blackhawk, written by Gerry Finley-Day, and the art work was done by Alfonso Azpiri. Essentially this was the story of a Nubian Galley slave who manages to thwart the capture of his ship from pirates. In recognition of his selfless valour, he is also commissioned as a Centurion in the Roman army, Hawk forms his own legion out of other slaves who are then treated as a type of "Dirty Dozen". His adventuress narrative was originally told in the comic strip Tornado. Later when Tornado merged with 2000AD his tale and further two other stories were the only ones to cross over and continued to be told. To fit in with 2000AD inherent science fiction theme Blackhawk's narrative took a twist as he was abducted by aliens and forced to participate in an outer space gladiators' arena.
I for one rather enjoyed the stories of Blackhawk. I still have the original comics, although they are rather frail editions now, due to the low quality of the paper used by the publishers. Hence this reprinted edition is a great way to rediscover these stories.
