If you had an established view, this book will give you a completely different view of the curse of Nazi Germany. It's chilling in it's simplicity, from the aspect of your Dad is the SS soldier at the heart of the book. Forget the high level German economics, politics, etc this is about the feet on the ground effect of being a family member. In many ways I found this book more disturbing than many I have read in my studies. The Nazi machine became very real and in the moment. The Author was born in 1951, this is a current document and should be part of any reading if you want an insight into the men who volunteered and served in the extreme end of the Nazi machine. Could it happen again, it has Cambodia, Yugoslavia etc, but could it happen here, now? I now think yes. We need to open our eyes to this world and be prepared to see this curse early. It's still out there today. It's not an easy read, but you will be wiser for it.

I was not too happy with the photos as they were not terribly clear. However, what did come across, and what is more important, was a picture of the totally callous mind of the author's father, for example, giving training to soldiers in how to shoot innocent people. It was very obviously extremely difficult and disturbing for Werner to have known of his father's cruelty to fellow humans. I was disappointed at reading of the complicity of isolated members of the Catholic clergy who gave comfort and support to these evil and unashamed killers of innocent Jewish people. I am a Catholic and proud of the very many good things that the Church has done and continues to do but not proud of the completely wicked and inexcusable support of the Nazi regime given by those, thankfully, few members of the clergy. This was a brave story to have told and the author has done well to have come through such a dark period of his life. I am glad I bought the book.

A moving story. It shows that whatever adversities are presented, they can be overcome by faith, the grace of God in action.
